ZIMBABWE Power Company is seeking investors to build a 30 megawatt hydro power plant in Gairezi as the company continues exploring small scale hydroelectric potential in the country, the power generating company said in a statement. Interested bidders are required to submit their proposals by November 8 this year and should disclose in their documents, “technical and funding” capability to implement the project.

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority has approved a number of mini hydro stations in Nyanga and Honde Valley which are at various stages of implementation. A United Kingdom-based company is planning to build a 15 megawatt hydro power station in Honde Valley at a cost of $30 million.

Already, the Honde Valley area has three operational mini hydro power stations namely the Nyamingura Mini Hydro, Dura Mini Hydro and Pungwe A Hydro power stations, all with combined capacity of 6MW.
All plants are connected onto the national grid.

Pungwe B Mini Hydro Plant is under construction and will have a generating capacity of 15MW.
Zimbabwe’s perennial power shortages have crippled operations of several companies, including mines while households are enduring long periods of power cuts.

Currently, the country is undertaking various projects aimed at boosting power supplies.
